Small details like this go a long way in selling the world. I really liked how different animations play out for collecting different rots. The animations here are also quite fluid while remaining responsive, and they play a vital role in making this world feel alive.
Not to mention that character designs from Kena herself to the NPCs and the rots are extremely well done, and they have their own distinct visual flair. The textures are extremely crisp, the lush green forests look alive, and the use of god rays here is absolutely sublime. VISUALS AND PERFORMANCEĪs I already mentioned, this game looks beautiful.
This weekend, I finally got the chance to play through Kena, and I’ll discuss how Ember Lab’s latest game fares. Though it was never on my radar, I was still keen to check it out as it looked like a beautiful platformer, and I figured that it would be a short and sweet ride that would act like a good palate cleanser for all the huge open-world games I’ve been playing this year. Kena Bridge of Spirits grabbed a lot of eyeballs when it was revealed last year at Sony’s PS5 showcase.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a story-driven action-adventure, that is where it shines the most. In summary, while it's rather a standard fare, the combat in this game is quite polished and well-executed. Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a story-driven game, and that is where it really stands out. Apart from these things, though, the game's combat doesn't offer anything new that has not been done before. They are small spirit companions that can offer you support in fighting or help you with certain obstacles that you'll encounter. You will also be tasked with collecting Rot along your journey. For defense, you have a pulse ability that generates a shield that can absorb a certain amount of damage. Your weapon can also be upgraded to a bow later in the game for ranged combat. Using your magical abilities, you’ll fight enemies using your staff which lets you do light, heavy, and charged attacks. You play as Kena, a spirit guide that helps these lost souls to the afterlife. This is due to lingering resentments that they hold after dying from a tragedy that struck them hundreds of years ago. It is set in a mystical village haunted by the souls of its once-living inhabitants, unable to pass to the afterlife. It looks more akin to a Pixar animated movie than a game when you first see it. Kena: Bridge of Spirits features a beautiful art style and design.
